Henry's News
AAA's
David Ragan at Indy
On July
27th, Henry helped escort a group to the Allstate 400 NASCAR race at the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway. About 60 AAA Associates, Preferred
Suppliers and very special guests spent a great day at the AAA VIP
suite. If you are going to attend a race, this is the only way to view
it! We started the morning early with a police escorted bus trip to help
navigate the traffic on the 35 mile trip from the hotel. Shortly after
arrival, we were treated with a visit by the Driver of the AAA # 6 Ford Fusion
- David Ragan. David is only 22, but he is very poised and well
spoken. He is in his sophomore year in the Cup Series and is beginning
to distinguish himself as a dependable strong finisher. He has yet to
win a Cup race, but as of this writing, he is only about 56 points out of the
Chase for the Championship.
During
David's visit, he signed autographs and gave us an update on the ugly
situation with tires. For some reason, the tires provided by the
manufacturer for all teams experience excessive wear after only 10 to 12
laps. NASCAR for safety reasons, required competition cautions hroughout
the race. This made it very slow for the drivers and painful for the
fans. David finished a respectable 14th for the day.
Prior
to the race, we received VIP treatment and visited a lot of places many fans
don't get to go. We visited and entered the hauler that transports the
cars around the country, went to pit row, saw the inspections from
"inside the ropes" and had fairly close access to many of the
drivers. The weather was wonderful and everyone had a great day. I
took several hundred photos which would likely bore you to death, but here are
70 that should cause you to keep clicking! Just click on DAVID
RAGAN AT INDY and enjoy!
St.
Andrews by the Sea, New Brunswick
Where's
St. Andrews, NB you ask? The
Town of St. Andrews is located in the southwest corner of New Brunswick on
scenic Passamaquoddy Bay. It has a relatively small population (year round
1700, summer 2500). The town boasts a public art gallery, a community
college, a world class golf course and numerous other amenities often
associated with larger centers. Founded in 1783, the town still retains much
of its old world charm. Streets that are safe, businesses that are
owner-operated and original architecture are just a few of the things you will
notice about St. Andrews.
Sam
and Henry flew from Sanford, FL to Bangor, Maine and then rented a car for the
2 1/2 drive East to the Canadian boarder and then South to St. Andrews.
We stayed at the Fairmont Algonquin, the hotel for the CAA Annual
Meeting. While the weather was wonderful when we arrived,
it turned rainy and cool as the week progressed. When not in meetings,
we toured the area. We saw a wonderful glass blowing demonstration by local
artist Jon Sawyer, we toured St. Andrews, the world famous Ganong Chocolate
factory in St. Stephens, the bayside community of St. George, and then we took
the ferry to Deer Island where a large contingent of lobster fisherman
practice their trade. On deer island, the
first thing we saw was a beautiful deer! And then we saw a huge snapping
turtle. The fog, however, was so heavy at times, it was difficult to see and photograph the landscape. We
did have several wonderful meals including a conference closing night lobster
feast! Click on ST.
ANDREWS BY THE SEA to enjoy the photos!
AAA
Foundation Golf Tournament
Preceding the 105th AAA Annual
Meeting was the fourth AAA Foundation Charity Golf Classic. This was the
most successful of the four events raising a record $180,000 to help fund the
Foundation's research projects. The Foundation is a
not-for-profit, publicly-supported charitable educational and research
organization. Since 1947, the Foundation has funded over 170 research projects
designed to discover the causes of traffic crashes, prevent them, and minimize
injuries when they do occur.
Over
120 golfers enjoyed the day that included golf at the Diplomat Country Club
and an awards luncheon. In addition to photos of the golf event, there
are photos taken from the balcony of our room on the 33rd floor of the Westin
Diplomat Resort that captured moon and sun rises and some assorted other
photos from Annual Meeting events. Click on FOUNDATION
GOLF for the tournament and other photos and FOUNDATION
SIGNAGE for sponsor signage that adorned the club house and course.
There are some additional photos from an earlier trip to Hollywood that can be
accessed from HOLLYWOOD

AAA
Team Building at Camp Thunderbird
Camp
Thunderbird in Apopka is wonderful 501 (c) (3) summer camp operated by
Quest. It serves under-privileged children and those with
developmental disabilities. In late April, the AAA Corporate Affairs
staff had a team building event here where we cleared heavy brush and
undergrowth from a large field. The weather cooperated because it was
cooler than average for this time of the year. We all worked hard
cutting brush and medium size bushes and then raking and hauling all the cut
brush to a "burn pile".
Despite
the hard work, we had fun too and the day helped us to appreciate even more
the many talents that we individually bring to the community and to our
jobs. After we were done, we enjoyed a wonderful lunch from Bubbalou's
Barbeque. Click on QUEST
TEAM BUILDING to view the photos.
Torrey
Pines, La Jolla, CA - February 2008
A
business trip to La Jolla, California (pronounced La Hoya) afforded some
wonderful vistas from my hotel room plus a visit to a unique auto and antique
museum that is only open to private groups. My room overlooked the 18th
hole of the famed Torrey Pines South golf course. This track recently
hosted the Buick Invitational that Tiger won and in June 2008, it hosts the US
Open.
The
AAA Board of Directors was hosted at The Evans Garage. This is a private
collection of antique automobiles and other vehicles plus many other
interesting artifacts. The owners of the collection also own the Torrey
Pines Resort and three other very upscale Resort Hotels in the area. We
were honors to have Mrs. Evans and her son Bill join us for dinner.

Belknap
College Reunion - October 2007
Belknap
College no longer exists, but it remains "alive" in the hearts of
those who attended between 1963 and 1974. Located on the Northern tip of
Lake Winnipesaukee in the town of Center Harbor, Belknap afforded its students
a unique learning experience in a beautiful local. The classes were
small and personalized, the professors were very committed to providing
quality education, and the entire college community was bound together during
a tumultuous time in our Nation's history - the Vietnam War. Many
different "philosophies" and attitudes emerged during Belknap's
almost 12 year history, but everyone affiliated worked towards keeping the school
open and vibrant. Regardless of the class and year of graduation,
students, faculty, and administrators continue to have a strong bond to each
other and have very fond memories of their Belknap experience.
Thanks
to the internet and the diligent work of many to locate those that have passed
through Belknap's doors, several reunions have been held in recent years; the
most recent occurring October 26 and 27, 2007. Almost 100 attended and
enjoyed a day and a half of fellowship and rekindled relationships. On
the first evening, a dinner and reception was held at the Canoe Restaurant,
formally known as the Longwood Dairy Bar. The next afternoon, a
reception was held at the Coe Inn which has been wonderfully restored and is
now a restaurant. That evening, a popular watering hole called The Mug
provided the venue for an enjoyable evening of renewing
friendships.
During
my stay, I visited the old campus buildings in Center Harbor and also up on
"The Hill." There was still some fall foliage visible although
the leaves were definitely on the wane in color. Whether you are an alum
or you just enjoy viewing scenic photos, click on BELKNAP
COLLEGE REUNION and enjoy.
Visits
with New Hampshire Friends - October 2007
Attending
the Belknap
College reunion afforded the opportunity to visit with many very special
friends and work associates. My rental car got plenty of miles on it.
The first trip was to West Ossippee to see Marie and Edjui. I worked
with Marie in Admissions, and Edjui was my Pinochle partner on many Friday
nights. Then it was off to Moultonborough to see
Dawn, John, Paulette and their families. We've been friends and
"family" for many years and it was wonderful to see everyone
again.
I
said goodbye to the beautiful lakes region and headed south to Manchester to see Nick and Bob
from AAA New Hampshire. We worked closely together for many years and
enjoyed several infamous "familiarization" trips that we still laugh
about. I really enjoyed my visit with Belle who has claimed Sam as her adopted
daughter after Sam's mom passed away. Sam and Belle write (not email)
every week to each other. Then it was off to Milford to see Brian who was my boss,
roommate, and friend when I worked at Belknap. Tired yet? I then traveled to
Henniker and Weare to see Joe at the Pharmacy, Fred and Jinny, Don and Eve,
and then Jeannie and her daughters Heather and Heidi with their
families. Joe is one of the founders of the infamous Carlson Cup
Golf event. I could never beat him! Fred and Jinny have been
friends of ours and also of Sam's parents when they were alive. In fact,
Fred's house was just a walk through the woods to see Charlie and
Addie.
Don
and I shared many years together on the Weare Fire Department. He taught
me the ropes and we spent many a cold night fighting fires and tending to
traffic accidents. Jeannie was our neighbor and we watched her two
daughters grow and have families of their own. When we moved to Wyoming
many years ago, Jeannie and the girls gave us a special gift to take with us
- their dog Chips. She lived to be 17 and was a wonderful
companion.
You
will see lots of photos of these special friends, scenic vistas 's and homes in
which we used to live by clicking on NEW
HAMPSHIRE FRIENDS. Enjoy!
Henry
has a new Blog - September 2007
OK, most
everybody these days has some type of "My Space" or Blog for posting
comments and allowing friends to easily post replies. Did you know that
there are over 71 million blogs and each day the number is growing exponentially?
So what is a blog and how can you read and contribute to Henry's blog?
A
blog is a website where entries are written and commonly displayed in reverse
chronological order. Blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject
such as food, politics, or local news; some function as more personal online
diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web
pages, and/or other media related to its topic. The best feature is the
ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format.
Content
from the blog author can be added from any location in the world via just
about any media that has internet access. That means any PC or cell
phone that is enabled with internet access. Photos can also be easily
uploaded and the blog I've selected automatically reduces the photo file size
for faster downloading to your device. Now I don't intend to write a
daily journal, but the blog will enable brief newsworthy updates without the
need for me to create a more complete and formal update on this webpage.
I will continue to post to my website photos and longer noteworthy stories.
Another
nice feature of the blog is that whenever a comment is added, I will receive
an email notifying me of a new post. Now I'm just a "newbie"
to this so I'll be experimenting for a while. If it doesn't work for me,
I may remove it. So help me with some input. Click on hscarfo.blogspot.com
and then post a comment. You might also want to save the site
address to your favorites. Henry's blog can also be accessed from the
left navigation buttons on the HOME PAGE of this
website. You will also see an easy to reply survey on the blog about music on my website.
I've been using background music since I started this site and I'm not sure
that everyone likes it. Now's your chance to provide me some comments!
Henry's
Favorite Links Page New & Improved
If you haven't been to Henry's Favorite Links Page in a while, it might
just be worth a visit. I've added many new links that I find useful and
frequent often. Just about every resource you need can be
accessed from here without spending lots of time searching the web.
The page is organized by category so it should be
easy for you to
find information. Note that site addresses change
frequently. If you find a link that is broken, please let me know.
And, if you have a favorite or useful link that you would like added, just Email
me! Click on Henry's Favorite Links to go to
that page.
